Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna, a member of the Committee, confirmed the news. He said the Board clarified that Mwendwa can contest for a different position after completing his presidential terms. Dr. Hesbon Owilla, the Board’s chair, reassured the Committee that strict measures are in place to ensure fairness and transparency in the elections.

The Board has also vowed to prevent fake delegates from participating. Alongside Mwendwa, Doris Petra is running for the FKF presidency. Other prominent figures in the race include former Gor Mahia star Sammy “Kempes” Owino, ex-FKF CEO Barry Otieno, and Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed.

Kakamega Homeboyz Chairman Cleophas Shimanyula is also contesting, along with Tom Alila, FKF NEC member Chris Amimo, and Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ocholla. The upcoming election promises to be one of the most competitive in FKF history, with many high-profile candidates vying for top positions.

The Closeted Skeletons of Mwendwa’s FKF Journey

Earlier this year, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) recommended prosecuting Nick Mwendwa over corruption allegations. The charges relate to Kenya’s 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) bid. Mwendwa faced accusations of mismanaging funds leading to Kenya losing the right to host the tournament.

EACC’s investigation uncovered irregularities in a Ksh.1.5 billion tender to upgrade stadiums for the competition. The commission found that Ksh.330.5 million was paid to Auditel Kenya for services not provided. The findings pointed to potential corruption. Mwendwa was set to face charges over the loss of this hefty sum.

Despite the ongoing case, Mwendwa’s role in Kenyan football’s corruption issues remained clear. He appeared central to fostering corruption within the federation. Kenya’s loss of CHAN hosting rights and the prior international football ban highlighted the damage under his leadership. His time in office further compounded the problem. Many fans and football stakeholders alike called for his removal from office.
