Download Birth Certificate
Learn how to download your birth certificate online in Kenya via eCitizen. Step-by-step guide to apply, pay, and print your certificate from home in 2026.
Getting a birth certificate in Kenya just became significantly easier. Starting June 22, 2026, Kenyans no longer need to queue at Huduma Centres or civil registry offices to collect birth certificates. The government has activated full online access! Meaning you can now apply, download, and print your birth certificate from the comfort of your home.
This is how it works, step by step.
A New Era for Civil Registration
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the new system allows full online processing, from application to downloading the final approved certificate. The shift ends a frustrating bottleneck that for years forced millions of Kenyans to make multiple trips to registration offices.
Previously, many Kenyans seeking birth certificates had to visit Huduma Centres, civil registration offices, or county registries to submit applications, make payments, or collect the documents. A process that often required long-distance travel and long waits, especially in major urban centres.
That era is now over.
What You Need Before You Apply
To successfully apply for a birth certificate online, gather the following documents in advance:
Applicants must provide a birth notification, which is issued by a hospital for facility births or by a local chief or assistant chief for home births. They are also required to present identification documents for both parents, such as national ID cards or passports.
You will also need an active eCitizen account registered in the name of the parent, guardian, or informant, plus a working mobile number and email address for status updates.
For late registration or adult applications, additional supporting documents may be requested, including baptismal cards, school records, or sworn affidavits.
Step by Step Download Your Birth Certificate Online
Step 1: Access the eCitizen Portal
Applicants begin the process by visiting the Civil Registration Services portal on the eCitizen platform. The official government gateway for birth certificate applications and other civil registration services. The portal address is crs.ecitizen.go.ke.
Step 2: Log In or Create an Account
Use your National ID number and password to log in. First-time users should click the registration option and create an account to get started.
Step 3: Select the Right Service
Once logged in, select “Application for Child’s Current Birth Certificate” from the available services menu. Navigate to the Civil Registration Department section and click “Get Service.”
Step 4: Enter Your Details and Upload Documents
Applicants are required to enter the requested information and upload scanned copies of their identification documents together with the birth notification. Double-check all details before proceeding.
Step 5: Pay the Processing Fee
The government applies a standard fee of KSh 200 for regular birth certificate applications and KSh 1,000 for amendment cases, processed through the eCitizen portal using mobile money. The eCitizen access charge applies separately.
Step 6: Download and Print Your Certificate
Once the application is submitted and approved, the birth certificate can be downloaded directly from the platform and printed from any location with internet access. Status updates arrive via SMS and email throughout the process.
How to Replace a Lost Birth Certificate
Lost your certificate? The same eCitizen portal handles replacements. Select the certified copy option under Civil Registration Services, upload the required identification, and pay the applicable fee. The system is designed to be accessible using a mobile phone or computer with internet access, making replacement far more straightforward than before.

Why This Matters
The announcement is expected to ease a long-standing bottleneck for millions of Kenyans. Especially those in rural and remote areas who previously faced long travel distances and delays, to access documents as basic as a birth certificate.
Beyond birth certificates, the government aims to expand eCitizen into a unified digital gateway for public services, cutting back on manual processes across departments. The platform currently hosts over 22,000 government services.
For Kenyans at home and in the diaspora, the ability to apply for a birth certificate online, track it, and print it marks a genuine turning point in how government works.
